JOAN MAGRANÉ

Joan Magrané (Reus, 1988) began his composition studies with Ramon Humet at the Vila-seca Conservatory, later perfecting them at the ESMUC in Barcelona with Agustí n Charles, in Graz with Beat Furrer, and finishing them at the CNSMD in Paris under the guidance of Stefano Gervasoni. He has been a laureate of the Académie de France in Rome (Villa Medici) and a member of the Académie de France in Madrid (Casa de Velázquez), as well as resident composer at La Pedrera (season 18/19) and guest composer at the Palau de la Música Catalana (19/20), the National Centre for the Dissemination of Music (20/21), and L’Auditori de Barcelona (21/22).

His music has been performed by ensembles, orchestras, and soloists such as the Ensemble Intercontemporain (Pintscher, Mantovani), Quatuor Diotima, Graindelavoix, London Sinfonietta (Colomer), Les éléments, the National Orchestra of Spain (Afkham), BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (Pintscher), the Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona and National Orchestra of Catalonia (Matheuz, Ono, Volkov, Morlot), RTVE Symphony Orchestra (Kalmar), Franz Schubert Philharmonia (Grau), the National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia (Valdivieso), Trío Fortuny, Quartet Gerhard, Kebyart, Azahar Ensemble, Isabelle Faust, Gérard Caussé, Josep Colom, Noelia Rodiles, Carlos Mena, Iñaki Alberdi, Tanguy de Williencourt, among others, at the Philharmonie in Paris, Lucerne Festival, BOZAR in Brussels, Théâtre du Châtelet, Heidelberger Frühling, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro Real, Peralada Festival, L’Auditori in Barcelona, Palau de la Música Catalana, National Auditorium in Madrid, Torroella Festival, Grand Théâtre de Provence, the Royaumont Foundation, and the Musée d’Orsay, among others.

In the field of opera, he has presented, together with playwright Marc Rosich, Diàlegs de Tirant e Carmesina (with Isabella Gaudí, Anna Alàs, and Josep Ramon Olivé, musical direction by Francesc Prat, and scenic space by Jaume Plensa), a co-production by Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació, the Peralada Festival, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu. His scenic work Intérieur (based on the eponymous play by Maurice Maeterlinck), with stage direction by Silvia Costa and musical direction by Matthias Pintscher, premiered in October 2021 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. In March 2024, he presented his Tenebrae Responsoria at the Peralada Easter Festival, with María Hinojosa and Pau Codina as soloists and the Gio Symphonia conducted by Francesc Prat.

He has been awarded multiple international prizes, among which stands out the XXXI Premio Reina Sofía de Composición – Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation. Some of his works are published by Éditions Durand and Ficta. Very interested in cultural dissemination, he published the book Antologia sentimental de la música catalana (Peu de mosca, 2022).
