Bio

The Casals Quartet, a defining presence on today’s international chamber-music scene, has established itself as one of the world’s leading string quartets over almost 30 years of activity.

Founded in 1997 at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, the Cuarteto Casals appears each season at the most prestigious venues worldwide, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and Boulez Saal, Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Musikverein, the Salzburg Festival, London’s Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Paris Philharmonie and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall.

Their deep commitment to the essence of every score is reflected in some twenty albums for the harmonia mundi label (including works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and the complete Beethoven cycle), as well as in their historically informed performances using Baroque and Classical bows from the Borletti Buitoni Trust in London. This approach coexists with premières and collaborations with leading contemporary composers, from György Kurtág to Francisco Coll.

In 2025–2026 they undertake the complete Shostakovich quartets, a project brought both to the recording studio and to full concert cycles in Madrid and Valencia. The season is completed with major works of the Classical and Romantic repertoire, alongside tours of North America and returns to the leading stages of London, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Vienna, Stockholm and Amsterdam, among others.

Alongside their concert activity, the quartet is deeply committed to pedagogy, holding residencies at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya and the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. They have received Spain’s National Music Prize, the Medal of Honour of the Reina Sofía School of Music, the Premi Nacional de Cultura de Catalunya and the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona, and serve as cultural ambassadors for the Government of Catalonia and the Institut Ramon Llull.
